The Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is committed to the recruitment, retention, and promotion of the nation’s brightest. The mission of the office is to build a community that supports the growth of those from diverse backgrounds while simultaneously recruiting and welcoming a diverse faculty and staff into our community.

We hope that our office creates space for members our community to voice their concerns, celebrate their differences, and recognize their similarities. Here we have created a place where mothers, fathers, daughters, and sons can come together to accomplish our shared goal: delivery of world-class care.

The Department of Medicine understands that with a diverse group of physicians we create our best workforce; the future of medicine depends on it. The creation of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion led by Dr. Naudia Jonassaint symbolizes our commitment to training the future leaders in medicine. While we focus on recruiting the best and brightest to our institution we also strive to foster the growth of our exceptional faculty through programming and structural change. We take seriously our mission to recruit, retain, and promote faculty who are diverse in every sense of the word: race, gender, socio-economic, ethnic, sexual orientation, and disability.

We know that diversity and inclusion creates excellence in research, education, and clinical care.

Naudia Jonassaint, MD, MHS, brings much experience to her role as the Department of Medicine’s first Vice Chair of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Dr. Jonassaint will focus her efforts on the training pipeline with special attention to the resident and fellowship training programs. She is working with leaders across the institution on community building and engagement initiatives to foster an environment of diversity and inclusivity.

She is a gifted physician and leader, exemplified by her stewardship of many clinical and educational initiatives at UPMC. The Department of Medicine is fortunate to have Dr. Jonassaint in this role, and I am delighted to partner with her on this essential mission.
